Ingham
Give Ingham one night as a Bruce Highway stop between Townsville and Cairns, or a half-day for the TYTO Wetlands and a deli lunch.
Ingham is a sugar town of about 4,400 people on the Bruce Highway, 110 km north of Townsville and roughly 240 km south of Cairns. Its Italian-Australian heritage shows in the food and in the annual Australian Italian Festival, and the TYTO Wetlands sit at the edge of town. Almost everyone arrives by car, train or coach and stays a single night.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
The town centre is flat and walkable in 10–15 minutes; the TYTO Wetlands are at the western end, near the visitor centre. There is no local bus network worth planning around, so a car, a lift or a taxi covers anything outside the centre. The Bruce Highway (A1) runs through town.

Watch out
Safety
- Wet season (roughly Dec–Mar) can close the Bruce Highway with flooding: check road conditions before driving between Townsville and Cairns.
- Crocodiles are present in north Queensland waterways; stay on the TYTO boardwalks and do not approach the water edges.
- Long highway stretches with few services: fuel up in Townsville, Ingham or Cardwell rather than between them.
- UV is extreme for much of the year: hat, water and sunscreen even on overcast days.
