Rockhampton sits almost on the Tropic of Capricorn, 7–8 hours' drive north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway and the regional centre of Central Queensland. It calls itself Australia's beef capital, and the cattle and gold money of the late 1800s left a compact, flat river city you can walk in an afternoon. Most travellers use it as a break in the Brisbane–Cairns drive or a rail stop on the Tilt Train; the coast at Yeppoon is 30 minutes away.

Getting around

The CBD is flat and compact, so the centre, esplanade and Botanic Gardens are walkable. A car is the practical choice for the Heritage Village, Dreamtime Cultural Centre, Mount Archer and the caves; all are on sealed roads. Taxis cover the city and airport (about 15 min); a taxi to Yeppoon is expensive, so use a bus or hire car instead.

Watch out

Safety

Rockhampton is a normal regional city: the main hazards are summer heat, highway trucks and crocodiles in the Fitzroy River. Keep to lit streets at night and don't walk the riverbank after dark.
  • Saltwater crocodiles live in the Fitzroy River: this is roughly the southern edge of their range. Do not swim or linger at the water's edge.
  • Many takeaways along the Bruce Highway south of the river switch to drive-through only after about 8:30–9PM.
  • Large trucks on the Bruce Highway and livestock on back roads: drive defensively.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; plan outdoor sights for the morning.
  • Cycling beyond the CBD is not recommended: bike lanes are paint only and rural traffic is heavy.
