Yeppoon

Give Yeppoon 2 nights, 3 if you add Great Keppel Island: base on Anzac Parade, hire a car, and treat it as the coast stop for Rockhampton.

Yeppoon is a beach town on the Capricorn Coast, about 40 minutes by car north-east of Rockhampton and the mainland gateway to Great Keppel Island. The strip runs from the marina and main beach out through Causeway Lake to Emu Park, so a car or the hourly bus decides what you actually see. Two nights covers the beaches and the Keppel day trip; most travellers pair it with Rockhampton or push on to Airlie Beach.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the coast strip is spread over roughly 30 minutes of driving. Youngs Bus Service runs hourly or so between Rockhampton, Yeppoon and the marina, with some services to Emu Park. Ferries to Great Keppel Island leave from Rosslyn Bay Harbour, about 10 min south of Yeppoon by car (check sailing times and the transfer).

Watch out

Safety

Yeppoon is a small, low-crime beach town; the real risks are marine stingers in the warm months, strong surf and currents, and long unlit stretches between the beach villages if you are walking or cycling after dark.
  • Marine stingers can be present in the warmer months: swim in netted areas or wear a stinger suit, and follow local signage. Check seasonal timing with local sources.
  • The coast is in the cyclone belt: check forecasts in the wet season and know your accommodation's evacuation advice.
  • Buses are hourly at best and stop early; without a car, plan around the timetable rather than the other way round.
  • Surf and tidal currents at open beaches can be strong; the patrolled area near the main beach is the safer swim.
