Central Mexico is the country's historic core: the Mexico City metro area, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, Hidalgo, Veracruz and Mexico State. Distances are short by Mexican standards — Puebla is about 2 hours by bus from Mexico City, Cuernavaca about 1.5 — so most travellers sleep in one or two bases and move by bus. The region holds Teotihuacán, the Iztaccíhuatl–Popocatépetl volcanoes and Pico de Orizaba, plus the colonial and food cities of Puebla and Veracruz.

Mexico City and the highlands: Rainy season roughly May–October, with afternoon showers; the dry months are cooler at night. Mornings are clearer year-round.
Gulf lowlands: Hotter and more humid; the same summer rain pattern, plus tropical storms late in the season.

Best months are the dry ones, but they are also the busiest; book Mexico City and Puebla beds ahead around holidays.
