The Yucatán Peninsula is a limestone plateau of Maya ruins, cenotes and colonial towns, distinct from central Mexico. Sleep in Mérida for Uxmal and food, or Valladolid for Chichén Itzá access. Treat the Caribbean coast (Tulum/Bacalar) and the southern jungle (Palenque) as separate loops connected by short flights or reliable buses.
