Rules in force · 5Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore…
- Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
- Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
- Laos ↗Get the visa only from the official government e-visa portal or at the airport or border desk; lookalike sites charge extra.
- Laos ↗Carry Lao kip in small notes; small shops, tuk-tuks and markets are cash-only, and Thai baht or US dollars are only accepted at some tourist businesses.
- Laos ↗At dawn alms-giving, watch from across the street, keep quiet, never use flash and never touch a monk.
Central Laos is the country's transit middle: the railway and Route 13 north of Vientiane are fast and paved, while everything east and south is slow, dusty and partly restricted. Sleep in Vang Vieng for karst and river days, in Vientiane for flights and the Mekong, and treat Phonsavan, Thakhek and Sam Neua as separate legs rather than day-trips.

- Vientiane 2 + Vang Vieng 2 + Thakhek 3 with the loop
- Xaisomboun Province east of Vang Vieng: permission required for some areas, entry can be refused, and several governments advise against non-essential travel.
- Route 13 south of Vientiane was badly potholed as of late 2024 under heavy truck traffic; the Vientiane–Vang Vieng stretch was resurfaced and is in good repair as of 2025.
- Thieves target travellers in remote spots, notably Route 6 near Sam Neua and Route 7 between Phou Kounh and Phonsavan.
- Do not hitchhike; waits are long and buses are cheap.
