Thakhek is a small Mekong town in Khammouane Province and the start of the Thakhek Loop, a roughly 500 km scooter circuit of karst, caves and the Kong Lor underground river. The town itself is a half-day: a market, a riverfront and cafés. Budget 3–4 days for the loop, 1 night if you are only passing to or from Thailand.

Getting around
The town is small enough to walk. Tuk-tuks cover most hops for 5,000–10,000 kip. For the loop, rent an automatic scooter (about 180,000 kip/day) or semi-automatic (about 150,000 kip/day) from a shop in town; shops ask for your passport or about US$300 as deposit. Bicycles can be hired for short rides to the Buddha Cave.

Watch out
Safety
- Police on the main road near the river have been reported stopping motorcyclists for invented offences and asking for 'fines'; carry a valid licence and stay calm.
- Rent a bike only from a shop that lets you test it; photograph existing damage before you leave.
- Fuel is scarce on the loop: carry a spare litre and top up whenever you see a pump.
- Roads are slippery after rain and animals (cows, buffalo, dogs) wander onto them; do not plan to ride fast or after dark.
- Kong Lor Cave ticket includes the boat; confirm the current price and boat rules at the office before paying.
