Pakse is the main city of southern Laos, at the junction of the Mekong and Xe Don rivers. It is a practical hub for the Bolaven Plateau's waterfalls and coffee farms and for the Wat Phou temple complex near Champasak. The city itself is small and quiet.

Getting around
Town is walkable; tuk-tuks and taxis cover short trips. Bolaven trips are done by hired driver, tour or rented motorbike.
Watch out
- Rainy-season roads on the plateau can be muddy or washed out.
- Rent motorbikes only with a valid licence and check your insurance.
