Southern Laos is the Mekong's flat, warm half: Khmer ruins at Wat Phou, coffee and waterfalls on the Bolaven Plateau, and the 4,000 Islands where the river breaks into channels before the Cambodian border. Pakse is the hub and the only international airport. Distances are short on the map but slow on the road, so pick two bases rather than five.
