Cape Town in May: what to expect

May is the handover month on the Cape. The long dry summer ends and the first cold fronts arrive from the Atlantic. Early May often still feels like April: sunny, warm at midday, with the south-easter blowing. Later in the month you can get wet, windy days in a row.

Days are short. Sunset falls before 18:00 by the end of the month, so plan outdoor sights — Table Mountain, Cape Point, the beaches — for the morning and early afternoon. The mountain cableway closes in high wind; keep a flexible day free.

The Atlantic seaboard (Camps Bay, Clifton) is cold for swimming all year, and May is no exception. If you want water, the False Bay side at Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Simon's Town is the better bet, though it is still cool.

May sits in the Cape's low season, between the Easter holidays and the June–July winter school break. Rates drop well below December–February levels, and you can usually book a good place a few weeks out rather than months. Flights into Cape Town are also cheaper outside the December peak.

The trade-off is that some seasonal businesses wind down. A few beach bars and outdoor tour operators run shorter hours or close for the winter, and boat trips to Robben Island or Seal Island can be cancelled by swell. Restaurants stay open; the Winelands and the city centre are unaffected. Check opening days before you commit to a boat trip.

If you are combining the Cape with a safari, May is the start of the dry season in Kruger, which is good for game viewing. That makes May one of the few months that works for both halves of a South Africa trip.

May is a quiet events month in Cape Town. The big summer calendar — the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March, the jazz festival around late March or early April, and the summer concert season — has finished, and the winter arts season has not started. Check local listings closer to your dates, because dates move each year.

Workers' Day falls on 1 May, a public holiday, so expect a long weekend at the start of the month and busier roads on the Garden Route and in the Winelands. After that the month is calm.

The other thing to watch is the weather itself. A cold front can close the cableway or cancel a harbour cruise with a day's notice, so build one spare day into a short trip.

Use the good days for the things that need clear weather: Table Mountain, the Cape Point drive, Chapman's Peak, and the Kirstenbosch gardens. Go early — the mountain often clouds over by afternoon in autumn.

Keep the wet days for the Winelands. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are about an hour's drive from the city, and cellar doors, restaurants and galleries work whatever the sky is doing. It is also the tail end of the wine harvest, so some estates are still busy with pressing.

In town, the museums, the Zeitz MOCAA and the V&A Waterfront are all-weather options. If you want wildlife without flying to Kruger, the Cape penguin colony at Simon's Town is on the False Bay side, and the whale season off Hermanus runs later in the year.

Pack for two seasons in one month. Layers are the answer: a T-shirt and light trousers for a sunny midday, plus a warm mid-layer, a windproof jacket and a compact umbrella for the fronts. A rain shell beats an umbrella on the windier days.

Shoes: comfortable walking shoes for the city and a pair with grip for Table Mountain or Lion's Head, where rock can be damp. Sunscreen still matters — the Cape sun is strong even at 20 °C, and the ozone layer over this latitude is thin.

If you plan to swim, add a rash vest or wetsuit top; the water is cold. Bring a power adapter for South Africa's Type M and Type C sockets, and a small daypack for the Winelands.

April is drier and slightly warmer, with the Easter holidays pushing prices up. If you want settled weather and do not mind more people, April is the safer bet.

June and July are the wettest, windiest months in Cape Town, with low prices. If your trip is mostly about the Winelands, museums and food rather than the beaches, that trade is worth it. March is the last full summer month and still busy.
