Cape Town in June: what to expect

June is the start of the Cape's rainy season. Cold fronts sweep in from the Atlantic, usually as two or three wet days followed by a bright, cold, still day. Rain rarely falls all day, but it can fall for most of one. Wind is the other factor: the north-west gales of winter are less famous than the summer south-easter, yet they still shut the Table Mountain cableway and cancel harbour boat trips.

Temperatures are mild by northern-hemisphere winter standards. Days around 18 °C feel warm in sun and cold in wind and rain; nights near 8 °C mean you want a proper jacket, not a hoodie. Inland and up the mountain it is colder — Table Mountain's summit can be several degrees lower with a wind chill that makes it feel close to freezing.

The sea is cold all year on this coast and June is no exception; swimming is for wetsuit surfers and the brave. If warm water matters, plan a Garden Route or KwaZulu-Natal leg instead.

June sits in the low season, and that is its main selling point. Hotel, guesthouse and self-catering rates drop well below December–February levels, and you can often book a good Cape Town apartment a few weeks out rather than months. Restaurants that need reservations in summer take walk-ins.

The exception is the winter school holiday, which falls in late June and into early July. For roughly two weeks, domestic families fill the coast and the Winelands, rates climb back toward mid-season and the popular family spots get busy. If your dates are flexible, the first half of June is the quietest and cheapest window.

Attractions stay open but some run shorter hours or close on windy days. Wine estates are quieter and often more generous with tastings; museums, galleries and the aquarium are unaffected by weather.

Cape Town's event calendar is thinner in winter than in summer, and dates move, so treat anything below as a lead to verify rather than a fixed fixture.

The winter arts season brings theatre, dance and music to city venues, and the Cape Winelands run winter tasting and food promotions through the colder months. The annual sardine run belongs to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coast, not the Cape Peninsula. Whale watching along the Western Cape coast generally starts around June and builds through to November, with Hermanus the main base.

Public holidays: 16 June is Youth Day, a national holiday. It can mean long-weekend traffic and fuller accommodation, and some businesses run shorter hours.

Build the trip around weather-proof and weather-dependent days, and swap them as the forecast changes. On a clear, still day, go up Table Mountain early — the cableway is the first thing wind closes. On a wet day, the Iziko museums, the Zeitz MOCAA and the Two Oceans Aquarium are all indoors, and the V&A Waterfront works in any weather.

The Winelands — Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl — are at their most comfortable in winter: cool, green, quiet, with fireplaces and cellar tours. It is a 45–75 minute drive from the city, so it also works as a wet-weather day trip. The Cape Peninsula drive to Simon's Town and Cape Point is spectacular but exposed; save it for a dry, calm day and expect the funicular and some roads to be affected by wind.

For wildlife, June is a good month to head east: whales off Hermanus and along the Overberg coast, and dry-season game viewing in Kruger and the Lowveld, where mornings are cold and layers matter. Many travellers pair a few Cape Town days with a flight to the Kruger area rather than driving.

Pack for wet, cold and wind, plus the occasional bright, mild afternoon. Layers beat a single heavy coat: a waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, long trousers and shoes that cope with puddles. Add a compact umbrella, a warm hat and gloves for mountain and safari mornings, and sunglasses and sunscreen for the clear days — the winter sun here still burns.

For a Kruger add-on, take a fleece and a windproof layer for open-vehicle game drives at dawn, when temperatures can sit near freezing. A power bank and a dry bag for electronics are useful on wet travel days.

May is drier and quieter, with the first rains arriving and good value before winter sets in. July is the wettest Cape month and the busiest of the winter school holidays, so it is usually worse than June on both counts. August stays wet but the days lengthen, the first Namaqualand flowers appear late in the month, and prices stay low.

If your priority is the Cape at its best, aim for October to April instead and read the best-time guide before booking.
