Cape Town in April: what to expect

April is autumn in the Western Cape. The summer south-easter that can shut the Table Mountain cableway weakens through the month, so clear days are calmer and easier to plan around. Early April often still feels like late summer; by the last week the first cold fronts of the winter rainy season can push through, bringing a day or two of wind and showers.

Daytime highs sit in the low 20s Celsius and nights drop into the low teens, so a light jacket matters after sunset. The Atlantic seaboard (Camps Bay, Clifton) is colder than the False Bay side (Muizenberg, Fish Hoek), where the water is a few degrees warmer. UV is still strong on clear days.

April sits in the middle band. The December–January domestic holiday crush is over, and May is quieter still, but Easter — which moves between late March and late April — brings a short, sharp spike in school-holiday travel. Accommodation in Camps Bay, the city bowl and Stellenbosch fills first, and Garden Route stops book out for the Easter long weekend.

Outside Easter week you can usually book hotels and guesthouses two to four weeks ahead without trouble, and shoulder-season rates apply. Flights into Cape Town International are cheaper than in December or January. Freedom Day on 27 April is a public holiday and creates another long-weekend bump, mostly domestic.

The fixed date in the Cape calendar is Freedom Day on 27 April, a national public holiday marking the first post-apartheid elections in 1994. Expect ceremonies and family events, plus heavier traffic on the N1 and N2 as people take a long weekend.

Easter — Good Friday and Family Day — falls in late March or April depending on the year, so check which dates apply to your trip. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival has historically been held around late March or early April; confirm the year's dates before booking around it. The Two Oceans Marathon, a major road and trail running weekend, has also been staged in the April period — check the current calendar.

April suits the whole Cape Peninsula. Table Mountain and Lion's Head are at their most comfortable — warm but not hot, and with less wind than midsummer. Kirstenbosch is green and quiet. The Atlantic seaboard beaches are still good for sunbathing, though the water is cold; False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are warmer and family-friendly.

It is also a strong month for the Winelands: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are past the February harvest rush but still pleasant for vineyard lunches. Whale season off Hermanus runs roughly June to November, so April is too early for that. If you want to combine the Cape with safari, April is one of the months that works for both the Cape and Kruger — fly between them rather than drive.

Layer for two seasons in one trip. Days are mild and often sunny; evenings and early mornings are cool, and a cold front late in the month can feel like winter for a day or two.

Bring a light waterproof shell, a warm mid-layer or fleece, comfortable walking shoes for Table Mountain and the city, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen), and swimwear — the sea is cold, so a wetsuit or rash vest helps on the Atlantic side. A windproof jacket is worth it for the cableway and the Cape Point drive.

March is warmer and drier but slightly busier; May is quieter and cheaper, with the first real Cape rains arriving. June is the wettest and windiest month in the Cape, though it is excellent for Kruger. If your dates are flexible and the Cape is the priority, April and March are the sweet spot; if value matters more, May.
