Big ValleyBig Valley, Alberta
Give Big Valley half a day plus one night if you want the steam train; otherwise pass through on Highway 56 between Stettler and Drumheller.
Big Valley is a 350-person prairie village that was a Canadian Northern Railway terminal in 1912 and still shows it: a 1912 station, a roundhouse interpretive centre, a preserved grain elevator and a boardwalk of small shops. The draw is the railway heritage walk and the Alberta Prairie steam excursion from Stettler. Two to four hours covers the village; a night makes sense only around a train day or a Red Deer River stop.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
You need a car: Highway 56 runs north to Stettler (about 32 km) and south to Drumheller (about 64 km), and Highway 590 heads west to the Red Deer River. The village itself is compact — the station, Main Street and the campground are all within a short walk of each other (check exact distances with your accommodation). No local bus or taxi service — check with your accommodation before arriving without a vehicle.
