Big Valley
Big Valley, Alberta
Give Big Valley half a day plus one night if you want the steam train; otherwise pass through on Highway 56 between Stettler and Drumheller.
Big Valley is a 350-person prairie village that was a Canadian Northern Railway terminal in 1912 and still shows it: a 1912 station, a roundhouse interpretive centre, a preserved grain elevator and a boardwalk of small shops. The draw is the railway heritage walk and the Alberta Prairie steam excursion from Stettler. Two to four hours covers the village; a night makes sense only around a train day or a Red Deer River stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and groceries are limited; fill up in Stettler or Drumheller (check).
- Cell coverage can be patchy on the back roads around the Red Deer River valley (check).
- Winter driving on Highway 56 and 590 can be icy; check Alberta 511 before setting out (check).
- The station museum and roundhouse centre are seasonal (Jul 1–Aug 31, 10:00–17:00); outside that window expect closed doors.
- Campground has no reservations and only 5 sites; arrive early on summer weekends.
Very low crime; the real risks are long driving distances, wildlife on the highway at dusk and sudden prairie weather. Tell someone your route if you camp at McKenzie Crossing.
