AlmonteAlmonte, Ontario
Go as a half-day stop from Ottawa or Carleton Place: 3–4 h covers the Riverwalk, falls and textile museum. Sleep over only for Celtfest or the Highland Games.
Almonte is a mill town of about 5,000 on the Mississippi River, 52 km west of downtown Ottawa. Its draw is compact: a riverwalk past the falls, a textile museum in a preserved woollen mill, and the James Naismith story. Two National Historic Sites sit within a few blocks, and the whole downtown is walkable in an afternoon. There is no public transit in town, so you need a car or a taxi from Stittsville.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
No public transit in Almonte. The downtown core is small and walkable, but winter sidewalks get extremely icy, so bring traction cleats if you plan to walk any distance. From Ottawa, OC Transpo route 61 runs to Hazeldean Rd/Carp Rd in Stittsville (about 54 min, every 30 min, C$4 — check current service), then a taxi covers the remaining 27 km (C$50–65, check). By car, take Highway 417 west and turn southwest onto March Road.
