The Berkshires are one rural county in western Massachusetts, about the size of Rhode Island, with three mountain ranges split by the Housatonic and Hoosic valleys. Sights are spread across towns 20–40 minutes apart, so a car and one base beat hopping hotels. Sleep in Lenox or Pittsfield for the north (Tanglewood, MASS MoCA, Mount Greylock), in Great Barrington for the south. Summer and fall are the peaks; winter is ski-only for most visitors.
