  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Adams is a small mill town in the northern Berkshires whose real draw is the mountain above it: Mount Greylock, at 3,491 ft (1,064 m) the highest point in Massachusetts, with the Appalachian Trail crossing the summit. The town itself is a short downtown, a rail trail and two small historic houses. Most travellers use Adams as a one- or two-night hiking base and drive in from Pittsfield or North Adams.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is close to essential: Route 8 traffic moves fast and the mountain road is a drive, not a walk. The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is paved and flat for walking and cycling between Adams, Cheshire and Lanesborough. Berkshire Outfitters on Grove Street rents bicycles (about $25/3 h, $35/day).

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Mount Greylock summit

go

Door to door: 30–40 min by car; 3–4 h on foot

Drive Rockwell Road from Lanesborough or Notch Road from North Adams; or hike the Cheshire Harbor Trail from West Mountain Road

Summit road and Bascom Lodge open roughly late May to mid-October; the tower gives long views on clear days.

Door to door: 20–30 min by bike

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail north–south, or Route 8 by car

Cheshire Reservoir and the trail's flattest, easiest stretch.

Door to door: 25–35 min

Route 8 south by car

The region's main town for supermarkets, restaurants and year-round lodging.

North Adams and MASS MoCA

go

Door to door: 20–25 min

Route 8 north by car

Big contemporary-art museum in a former mill; pair with the Western Gateway Heritage State Park visitor centre.

Williamstown

go

Door to door: 30–35 min

Route 2 or Route 7 north by car

College town with the Clark Art Institute.

Door to door: 50–60 min

Route 7 south by car

A long evening drive back after a concert; consider sleeping in Lenox instead.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Adams (Park Street / Route 8)

Walkable to the rail trail's north end and a few places to eat; small inns and short-term rentals, limited rooms in summer.

Bascom Lodge, Mount Greylock summit

Seasonal bunkhouse and rooms at 3,491 ft; the only bed on the mountain, so book ahead and bring warm layers.

Greylock Glen / outskirts

Quieter rentals at the foot of the mountain; you need a car for everything.

Pittsfield or North Adams

More beds, restaurants and year-round services, 25–35 min by car each way.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and fast traffic on Route 8. Tell someone your route before hiking and carry a layer.
  • The Mount Greylock summit road (Rockwell Road from Lanesborough, Notch Road from North Adams) closes in winter and reopens around late May — check before driving up.
  • Bascom Lodge and the Veterans War Memorial Tower close for the season around Columbus Day.
  • Weather at the summit is far colder and windier than in town; carry a jacket even in July.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the mountain; do not rely on GPS for the summit roads.
  • Route 8 has no useful sidewalk outside downtown — drive or ride, do not walk it.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for ALB, BDL and BOS: last sensible arrival times, car-hire desk hours, taxi fallback.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: downtown Adams, the rail trail, Greylock Glen, the summit.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Susan B. Anthony Birthplace, Quaker Meeting House, Bascom Lodge, summit road) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Winter and mud-season fixtures so the mountain pages can go green or red honestly.
