Amble
Give Amble one night, two at most: a harbour base for a puffin boat trip, Warkworth Castle and the Coquet coast, not a stand-alone destination.
Amble is a working harbour village of about 5,900 people on the Northumberland coast, 10 miles north of Morpeth and 10 miles south of Alnwick. The draw is Coquet Island, a bird reserve a mile offshore that you can only see by boat, plus Warkworth Castle two miles up the road. Most travellers pass through on the X18 bus or stop one night on a coast run between Newcastle and Berwick.

- Coquet Island is a bird reserve: landing is not permitted, so book a boat trip rather than expecting to go ashore.
- Boat trips are weather-dependent and seasonal; confirm departure on the day and keep a land-based backup.
- The X18 and X20 run hourly, not all trains stop at Alnmouth, and a change at Newcastle can make the bus quicker.
