Tel Aviv is Israel's second-largest city by population within the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality and its commercial and diplomatic centre — most foreign embassies are based here rather than in Jerusalem. It is a Mediterranean beach city built around the Bauhaus-style White City, the old Arab-Jewish port of Jaffa to the south, and a nightlife and food scene that runs later than most of the region.

- Public transport and most shops close from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening for Shabbat; taxis and sheruts still run.
- Summer heat and humidity together are more draining than the temperature alone suggests; keep water on you.
- Swim only at beaches with a lifeguard flag system, and don't swim on a black-flag day — currents can be strong.
