About these names

Beijing's formal districts (Dongcheng, Xicheng and others) are large administrative areas, not useful walking units for a visitor; this table uses the same cluster names as the rest of this guide.

A first visit works as four separate half-day clusters rather than one walkable centre: the Forbidden City and Tiananmen axis, Wangfujing's shopping streets just east, the Nanluoguxiang and Gulou hutongs to the north, and Temple of Heaven Park to the south. Each is reached by subway or taxi from the others; walking between them is a long haul.

  • Beijing's largest and most active Tibetan Buddhist temple, a short subway ride or walk from the Nanluoguxiang hutongs: incense smoke, working monks, and a 18 m sandalwood Buddha in the final hall. 60–90 minutes.

  • Two Yuan-and-Ming-era towers that once told Beijing the time by drum and bell: climb the Drum Tower's steep stairs for a hutong rooftop view, and catch a drum performance if the timing works. 30–45 minutes.

Eat

What to order and what locals pay, from each eat page. Prices are estimates; check the menu.

  • Hutong noodle and dumpling house

A small, no-frills noodle and dumpling counter in the Nanluoguxiang hutongs: point at the picture menu, cheap and fast, no reservation needed. Best lunch or early dinner before the lanes fill up.

Order: Zhajiangmian: Ask for it mixed at the table if it does not arrive pre-tossed.

Price: A bowl of noodles or a plate of dumplings runs roughly ¥15–35 (≈ US$3–5) (2026 estimate).

Sleep

  • Slower nights in a courtyard guesthouse; cars stop at the lane mouth, so expect a walk with the bags — ask the host for a night contact and check the desk hours.

Skip this if: Lanes are dark and uneven at night; cars cannot reach the door.
