Yanqing, Beijing: neighborhood guide

Yanqing District sits in the northwest corner of Beijing Municipality, where the plains run into mountains. It is not a city neighbourhood in the usual sense: it is a rural district with a small town centre, ski slopes, a gorge and several sections of the Great Wall. Badaling, the most visited wall section, is inside the district.

The district hosted the alpine skiing, bobsled, luge and skeleton events of the 2022 Winter Olympics, which left behind upgraded roads, a high-speed rail line and a cluster of resort hotels. Outside winter and the wall, Yanqing is quiet. Evenings are early, streets empty fast, and English is limited outside hotels and ticket offices.

Distances are large. Badaling, Yanqing town and Longqing Gorge are separate places connected by road; a car, a taxi or a tour bus is needed for anything beyond the rail and bus corridors.

For a standard first trip to Beijing, no. The Forbidden City, hutongs, museums and restaurant districts are all in the central city, and commuting from Yanqing would cost you two to three hours a day. Stay in Xicheng, Dongcheng or Chaoyang and treat Yanqing as a day trip.

Stay in Yanqing if the Great Wall is the point of the trip and you want to be at Badaling when the gates open, before the tour buses arrive. Two nights is enough. It also works for a ski weekend in winter, or for hikers heading to the wild wall sections near Chenjiapu.

A middle option: one night in Yanqing town or near Badaling, then back to the city. That gets you an early wall start without committing the whole trip.

Food in Yanqing is simple and local: country-style Chinese cooking, lamb and mutton hotpot, grilled meats, noodles and dumplings, with trout and other freshwater fish near Longqing Gorge. Around Badaling the strip by the ticket area is aimed at tour groups, with higher prices and average quality; the town centre is better value.

Most restaurants are small, cashless and Chinese-language only. Alipay or WeChat Pay with a translation app covers nearly everything; a few hotel restaurants take international cards. Vegetarian options exist but are rarely labelled, so ask for dishes without meat or fish sauce.

Alcohol is limited to beer and baijiu in local restaurants. If you have dietary needs, eat your main meal in Beijing before travelling out.

High-speed rail is the fastest route. Trains run from Beijing North or Qinghe stations toward Zhangjiakou, stopping at an underground station at Badaling and continuing to Yanqing town. Most departures leave from Qinghe, on metro Line 13. Second class fares are around ¥23 to Badaling and up to ¥35 to Yanqing (2026 estimate). Book with your passport; seats sell out on weekends and holidays.

Buses are the cheap fallback. Express bus 919 leaves Deshengmen West Bus Terminus, near Jishuitan station exit B, frequently and takes about 90 minutes to Dafutuo in Yanqing. Bus 877 runs from Beitucheng to Badaling in about an hour; the last bus back to Beijing leaves around 17:00. The Beijing Suburban Railway from Nankou to Badaling is slow and infrequent, with only a few departures a day.

Ignore touts at bus stops offering private rides to the wall; they charge more and may not go where you asked. Once in the district, taxis and ride-hailing are the practical way between Badaling, Yanqing town and Longqing Gorge. From Badaling station it is about an 800 m walk to the wall entrance.
