Xicheng, Beijing: neighborhood guide

Xicheng means West City. It sits on the west bank of the central axis, covering the old imperial city's western half and running out past the 2nd Ring Road. This is the political core of Beijing: ministries, party compounds and the Zhongnanhai leadership area occupy a large share of the map, which is why parts of the district feel formal and low-key rather than commercial.

For a visitor the useful shape is simple. The north holds Houhai and the Shichahai lakes, ringed by hutong lanes, courtyard houses and a dense strip of bars and restaurants. The middle holds Beihai Park and Jingshan Park, both former imperial gardens, plus the Forbidden City's west flank. The south, historically the Xuanwu district, is more ordinary and residential, with Taoranting Park and Grand View Garden. Xidan, in the east of the district, is a large shopping zone with department stores and malls.

In 2024 the Beijing Central Axis, including Jingshan Park, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which has kept the area busy with domestic tourists in peak season.

Yes, if your trip is about the classic central sights and you want to walk to them. Beihai, Jingshan and the west gate of the Forbidden City are all in or beside the district, and Houhai gives you an evening circuit of lake, bars and snack stalls without a taxi. Hutong guesthouses and mid-range hotels around Shichahai and the Drum Tower side of the lakes are the main draw.

No, if you want nightlife volume, international restaurants or a single-seat airport ride. Dongcheng has the livelier bar streets and more hotel choice; Chaoyang has the embassy district, Sanlitun and most of the city's Western dining. Xicheng evenings thin out early once you leave the Houhai strip, and the district's political buildings mean some streets are closed to through traffic (check).

A practical compromise: stay in Xicheng for two or three nights of sightseeing, then move east if you want a different evening scene. The subway makes switching easy.

The reliable eating is around the Shichahai lakes and the hutong lanes behind Houhai, where courtyard restaurants serve Beijing staples: roast duck, zhajiangmian (noodles with fermented bean sauce), dumplings and hotpot. Prices climb with the lake view; walk two lanes inland for the same dishes cheaper and with more locals.

Xidan and the streets around it are the other cluster, mostly mall food courts and chain restaurants, useful when you want air conditioning and English menus. For breakfast, look for jianbing and baozi stalls on hutong corners before 09:00. Vegetarian options exist but are limited outside the bigger restaurants; ask, and expect dishes cooked with meat stock.

Reservations matter for roast duck at weekends. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive, since foreign card acceptance varies by shop (check).

Xicheng is served by subway lines 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 13, which covers almost everything a visitor needs. Beihai North station on Line 6 puts you at the park's north gate; the Line 4 stop at Beijing Zoo handles the zoo and aquarium; Line 2 loops the old city edge.

From Beijing Capital Airport, take the Airport Express to Dongzhimen and change to Line 2 in either direction. From Beijing West Railway Station, take Line 9 and change to Line 1 or Line 6. From Beijing Railway Station, Line 2 is a short ride. Check current hours and fares, and allow extra time at rush hour (check).

On the surface, the hutongs around Houhai are best walked or cycled; taxis cannot always enter the narrow lanes. Distances inside the district are short: Beihai's south gate to Jingshan is a walk of roughly 20 minutes (check).
