What Haidian is like
Haidian is a large district in the north-west of Beijing, built up from the Yuan dynasty and later used for the emperors' summer palaces. Today it is the city's academic and technology belt: Peking and Tsinghua universities, the Zhongguancun electronics and IT quarter, and a student-driven nightlife strip at Wudaokou.
The district is not a walking neighbourhood in the way Dongcheng is. Sights sit kilometres apart, and you move between them by metro or taxi. What it does have is space, green parkland around the Summer Palace, cheaper food and drink than the centre, and a large Korean minority around Wudaokou, which shows in the restaurants there.
Should you stay here or not
Stay in Haidian if the Summer Palace is a priority and you want to start early before the crowds, if you are visiting a university, or if you have business in Zhongguancun. It also suits longer stays where a quieter, cheaper base matters more than being next to the headline sights.
Do not stay here for a first trip of three or four nights. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen, the Temple of Heaven and the main hutong areas are all in the centre, and you would spend 30–45 minutes each way by taxi, or a metro ride with a change, every day. Base in Dongcheng or Chaoyang and come out on Line 4 instead.

Eating and drinking
Wudaokou is the eating and drinking centre, with student prices and a strong Korean restaurant scene alongside Chinese options. Zhongguancun has food courts and casual places serving the office and university crowd. Around the universities you find cheap canteen-style meals and noodle shops.
For a specific dish, look for Beijing staples: zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste), dumplings, and hotpot. Near the Summer Palace, options thin out and are mostly aimed at day visitors, so eat before or after your visit rather than at the gate.

Getting in and around
Metro is the reliable way in. Line 4 runs north–south through the district and stops at Beigongmen for the Summer Palace and at Yuanmingyuan Park Station for the Old Summer Palace. Lines 10 and 13 serve Zhongguancun and Wudaokou, and Lines 16, 7, 9, 1 and 6 also reach parts of the district (check current lines and exits).
Taxis from central Beijing take about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic; buses take longer. Once inside Haidian, allow 20–40 minutes between the Summer Palace area and Wudaokou by metro plus walking. Buy and top up a transport card or use the metro app, and carry your passport as ID for rail and some tickets.
