The Barkly is a treeless Mitchell-grass plain the size of the UK with about 6,300 people, most of them in Tennant Creek. It is a corridor, not a destination: two sealed highways, roadhouses spaced 100–250 km apart, and one standout sight, Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles). Come May–Sep with your own vehicle, fuel up at every roadhouse, and treat it as one or two nights between Alice Springs and Katherine or the Queensland border.
