The Top End is a tropical region the size of a small country, but almost everything a first trip wants sits within a 3-hour drive of Darwin: Kakadu, Litchfield, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) and the Adelaide River wetlands. Darwin is the only city with an airport, hospitals and a full bed range, so sleep there and treat the parks as loops. In the dry (May–Sep) the roads are sealed and the waterfalls run; in the wet (Nov–Apr) many park roads and falls close and the heat and humidity are punishing. Two parks plus Darwin is a full week; three is a stretch.

- Driving at night is the main risk: wildlife, feral animals and buffalo on the road. Plan to arrive before dark.
- In the wet, flooded crossings and closed park roads can strand you; check road access before setting out.
- Swimming is only safe where signs say so; freshwater pools can still hold crocodiles after floods.
