Bari is Puglia's capital and its main transport hub: ferries to Greece, Albania and Montenegro, trains to Matera and the trulli towns, and an airport 9 km out. The old town is small and walkable, the Murat grid is where you sleep and shop. Most travellers use Bari as a 2-night base, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Murat to Bari Vecchia is 10–15 min on foot. AMTAB city buses cost €1 pre-purchased, €1.50 on board. Trains from Bari Centrale cover the region: Ferrovie del Sud Est to Alberobello, Ferrovie Appulo Lucane to Matera, Ferrotramviaria to the airport. Parking in blue zones is paid Mon–Sat 08:30–20:30, free Sundays and holidays.

Safety

Bari is a normal southern Italian city: safe by day, more care needed at night around the station and the old-town edges. Watch for pickpockets in crowds and on buses; keep bags zipped.
  • Old-town churches are mostly closed to tourists; they open on feast days only.
  • Bari Vecchia lanes are fine by day; stick to lit streets at night and keep bags zipped in crowds.
  • Ferry and train tickets for summer weekends sell out: book ahead.
  • August: many family-run restaurants and shops close for Ferragosto.
