The Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) run 560 km east–west across Bulgaria, splitting the country in two. The towns sit on the foothills, not in the range: Gabrovo and Tryavna in the north, Karlovo and Kazanlak in the south. Pick one base, drive or bus to the trailheads, and treat the ridge as day walks rather than a through-hike unless you are camping. Trains are slow; a car is the difference between two sights a day and five.

The ridge is a real mountain: weather turns fast above 1,500 m, and marked trails can be unmaintained. Tell someone your route.
Foothill buses are infrequent on weekends and rarely reach trailheads; without a car, plan around town-to-town legs only.
Many small museums and monastery rooms keep short, seasonal hours — confirm before a long detour.

North foothills (Gabrovo, Tryavna): Sheltered from the worst ridge wind; spring and autumn are the walking months, July–August afternoons are hot.
High ridge and passes: Snow can lie into May and return in October; the Shipka and Troyan passes close in heavy winter.
South side and Rose Valley (Karlovo, Kazanlak): Warmer and drier than the north; roses bloom late May to early June.

Late May–June and September–early October give the best mix of open trails and comfortable walking; July–August is hot in the valleys but fine on the ridge.
