Ayrshire is a low coastal crescent south-west of Glasgow: sandy links golf, Burns heritage at Alloway, ruined castles every few miles, and the ferry to Arran from Ardrossan. Trains from Glasgow Central reach Ayr in about 50 minutes, so it works as a 2–3 night base or as day trips from Glasgow. Sleep in Ayr for transport and food, in Troon for golf, in Largs for the Clyde coast and Cumbrae.

Arran as a day trip from Ayrshire is a long day: two ferries and a bus, with little walking time.

Ayrshire coast: Gulf Stream keeps winters mild and wet; May–September is the driest window, with long daylight in June and July.

Midges are less of a problem on this exposed coast than inland, but west-coast rain is common year-round. Book Arran ferries and golf ahead for July and August.
