Auroville is a planned international township 6 km north of Puducherry, spread across Tamil Nadu scrub and farmland. Around 3,300 residents from dozens of countries live here. Visitors come for the Matrimandir, the farms and cafés, and a slower pace than Puducherry. One night suits a Matrimandir-and-cafés stop; two nights if you want the beach, a farm visit and a day in Puducherry.

Auroville is spread out, and the source advises renting transport rather than relying on walking. Rent an e-cycle (about ₹200/day) or a motorbike (₹50–100/day) from the Visitors' Centre or your guest house; some guest houses lend bicycles free. Rickshaws and taxis must be ordered for trips out. Watch out
Safety
- Matrimandir access rules and timing: check with the Visitors' Centre before you plan your days; bags, phones and cameras are not allowed inside.
- Solar Kitchen and La Terrace do not accept cash — you need a guest card loaded with credit from the Visitors' Centre.
- Roads around Kuilapalayam carry cows, dogs, ox carts and buses; traffic is heaviest at dusk.
- Petrol stations are scarce inside the township; fill up on the Beach Road before you head in.
- Dec–Feb is peak season — book guest houses weeks ahead.
