Give Auroville 1–2 nights, not a rushed day trip: it is only 6 km from Puducherry, but the township is spread out and Matrimandir access rules and timing need checking with the Visitors' Centre first.
Auroville is a planned international township 6 km north of Puducherry, spread across Tamil Nadu scrub and farmland. Around 3,300 residents from dozens of countries live here. Visitors come for the Matrimandir, the farms and cafés, and a slower pace than Puducherry. One night suits a Matrimandir-and-cafés stop; two nights if you want the beach, a farm visit and a day in Puducherry.

Get around
Auroville is spread out, and the source advises renting transport rather than relying on walking. Rent an e-cycle (about ₹200/day) or a motorbike (₹50–100/day) from the Visitors' Centre or your guest house; some guest houses lend bicycles free. Rickshaws and taxis must be ordered for trips out. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
- Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
- Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
- Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside
- Questions: Expect personal questions (married? job? salary?) as friendliness; avoid: Taking offence; answer vaguely if you prefer
- Saying no: A firm, polite 'nahi, dhanyavaad' (no, thank you) and keep walking; avoid: Long explanations to touts

Scams and watch-outs
- Matrimandir access rules and timing: check with the Visitors' Centre before you plan your days; bags, phones and cameras are not allowed inside.
- Solar Kitchen and La Terrace do not accept cash — you need a guest card loaded with credit from the Visitors' Centre.
- Roads around Kuilapalayam carry cows, dogs, ox carts and buses; traffic is heaviest at dusk.
- Petrol stations are scarce inside the township; fill up on the Beach Road before you head in.
- Dec–Feb is peak season — book guest houses weeks ahead.
Auroville itself is calm and safe for visitors, including solo women in the daytime. The real risks are scooter accidents on the ECR, heat in Apr–Jun, and unlit roads after dark — carry a charged phone and avoid riding at night.
