Where to stay in Andorra: best areas and types of hotel

Andorra is small enough that one base works for the whole trip. Stay in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany if you are here 1–2 nights for duty-free shopping, the Caldea spa and onward buses. Stay in Soldeu, El Tarter or Pas de la Casa for a Grandvalira ski week, in Arinsal or La Massana for families and Vallnord lifts, and in Ordino or La Cortinada if hiking is the point. Nothing is more than roughly 30 minutes by car from anything else, so the choice is about your mornings, not about distance.

The capital sits at about 1,023 m and holds most of the hotels, the shopping and the main bus connections to Barcelona and Toulouse. Escaldes-Engordany, immediately east, is the same urban area with the spa and more apartment-style stays.

Ski bases are villages at the foot of the lifts. Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, reached from Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Pas de la Casa; Vallnord's sectors are reached from La Massana, Arinsal and Ordino. Staying slope-side costs more but removes daily driving on winter roads.

For summer, Ordino and the villages up the Valira valleys give you trailheads and quiet nights, while still leaving the capital 20–30 minutes away for shops and restaurants.

Andorra runs on two markets: ski-season packages and duty-free weekenders from Spain and France. That means winter and holiday weekends cost far more than midweek in May or October.

Mid-range doubles in the capital typically fall around €70–120 a night outside peak dates, with spa and four-star properties higher. Ski resorts charge by season and often by package including lift passes. Hostel and guesthouse beds are limited compared with Spain or France, so budget travellers should book earlier rather than later. Expect a small per-person nightly tourist tax on top of the room rate.

For a ski week between December and March, book two to four months out if you want a specific village or a family room; Christmas, New Year and February school holidays sell out first. Summer hiking dates are easier, but August weekends and Andorran public holidays still fill the capital's car parks and better hotels.

Off-season, two to four weeks ahead is normally enough. If your trip depends on a particular spa hotel or a slope-side address, treat it as a ski booking whatever the month.

There is no airport and no railway in Andorra, so your arrival is a bus or a car over the Pyrenees. Buses from Barcelona and Toulouse drop at the capital's bus station, which makes a first night in Andorra la Vella practical before moving to a village.

Villages are connected by local buses, but services thin out in the evening and in low season; a car gives you far more freedom for valley bases. Winter driving means snow tyres or chains and patience with tunnel and pass closures.

Prices are in euros, cards are widely accepted, and tipping is optional as in Spain. Check your travel insurance covers winter sports and mountain rescue before you book a ski base.
