Summary by passport, month and cost
Andorra is not in the Schengen area but sits between France and Spain, so most visitors arrive on a Schengen entry and cross a land border with no routine passport check. US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can enter visa-free as tourists; stays are short by design because the country is small. Confirm your own entry position before booking, especially if you need a Schengen visa for the surrounding countries.
Timing decides which half of the list is open to you. Ski bases such as Soldeu and Pas de la Casa run roughly December to April, with the most reliable snow in January to March. Hiking valleys such as Vall de Madriu and Ordino Arcalís are at their best June to October. The capital works all year.
| Passport / situation | Entry note | Best months | Typical daily cost (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Ireland | Visa-free tourist entry; no Andorran airport, arrive via Spain or France | Jan–Mar ski, Jun–Oct hike | €90–180 per person |
| Schengen visa holder | Enter from Spain or France; Andorra itself is outside Schengen | Jan–Mar ski, Jun–Oct hike | €90–180 per person |
| Ski week, 4–6 nights | Book lift pass and lodging together for the best rate | Jan–Mar | €120–250 per person |
| Budget hiker, hostel or guesthouse | Ordino and the capital have the cheapest beds | Jun–Oct | €60–110 per person |
Costs are 2026 estimates for one person per day, excluding travel to Andorra. Verify entry rules with official sources before you book.
The places, in the order most trips use them
Start with Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. The two towns run into each other along Avinguda Meritxell, so one base covers the Barri Antic old quarter, the Casa de la Vall parliament house, Església de Sant Esteve and the main shopping streets. Caldea, the thermal spa, sits in Escaldes-Engordany. Give the capital 1–2 nights, or a full day if you are passing through.
Add Ordino for a quieter second base. The stone village has museums and trailheads, and it is the practical gateway to the Vall de Madriu, a UNESCO-listed valley, and to the Tristaina lakes above Ordino Arcalís. Two to three nights lets you hike on two full days without rushing.
Choose Soldeu if the trip is about skiing. It is the main Grandvalira village, with lifts, rentals and après-ski in walking distance, and it suits a 4–6 night week. Pas de la Casa, on the French border, is the other ski-and-shopping option and is easy to reach from Toulouse. Arinsal covers the Pal Arinsal sector and the Coma Pedrosa trailhead in summer.
If you have only one day, do the capital: old quarter, Casa de la Vall, a walk along the shopping street and an hour at Caldea. That is the honest limit of a day trip once the coach ride is counted.
- Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany — capital sights, spa, shopping; 1–2 nights
- Ordino — quiet base for Vall de Madriu and Tristaina lakes; 2–3 nights
- Soldeu — Grandvalira skiing and après-ski; 4–6 nights in winter
- Pas de la Casa — French-border ski and shopping town; 2–4 nights
- Arinsal — Pal Arinsal sector and Coma Pedrosa access; 2–4 nights
- Vall de Madriu — UNESCO valley hike; day trip, no overnight
- Estanys de Tristaina — lake circuit above Ordino Arcalís; day trip
- Coma Pedrosa — highest peak trail from Arinsal; day trip
Notes before you commit
Andorra has no airport and no railway. Every trip starts with a coach or car ride over the Pyrenees from Barcelona or Toulouse, which is why the country works best as an add-on rather than a standalone city break. Check current coach timetables and border queues before you fix dates.
The country is small enough that one base covers most of it, but mountain roads and seasonal closures change driving times. In winter, carry or fit snow chains where required and check pass conditions. In summer, afternoon storms are common in the high valleys, so start hikes early.
Duty-free shopping is a real reason people come, but it is not a reason to plan a week. Pair it with the old quarter and a spa visit, then move on to the mountains or back to Spain or France.
- Book Casa de la Vall guided visits ahead in summer
- Check snow-chain rules and road status in winter
- Carry cash for small village businesses
- Travel insurance should cover hiking and winter sports if you plan either
