Where to stay in Addis Ababa: best neighborhoods and hotels

If you are in Addis for one or two nights between flights, stay in Bole. The airport is in the same district, so you avoid a long cross-city drive on arrival and can walk to restaurants and coffee in the evening.

If Addis is the destination — museums, Merkato, the National Museum and the city's food — stay in Kazanchis or around Piassa and Meskel Square. You trade a longer airport run for shorter daily trips.

First-time visitors with three or more nights: split the stay. One night in Bole on arrival, then move to the centre. It costs one extra check-out and saves two airport drives.

Distances below are road distances in normal traffic; Addis traffic can double them at peak hours. Prices are 2026 estimates for a double room and should be checked before booking.

Bole is the practical default. Bole Road and the streets behind it hold most of the international chains, mid-range hotels and guesthouses, plus cafés, bars and restaurants within walking distance. If you land late or leave before dawn, this is the area that keeps the trip simple.

Kazanchis and the area around the African Union headquarters suit business travellers and anyone who wants a calmer, greener base with reliable mid-range hotels. It is a short drive to Meskel Square and the museums, and further from Merkato.

Piassa and the Meskel Square side are the older city centre: cheaper rooms, more street life, more noise. Good for budget travellers and for anyone who wants to walk to markets and churches. Rooms vary a lot at the same price, so read recent reviews.

Sarbet and Old Airport are residential and quiet, popular with longer-stay visitors, NGOs and families. You will rely on taxis or ride-hailing for everything.

Altitude is the factor most visitors underestimate. At about 2,350 m, the first night is often light and broken. Do not book a room up four flights of stairs, and do not plan a full day on arrival.

Ethiopia's birr has floated since 2024, so convert at the day's rate and expect hotel quotes in birr or US dollars depending on the property. Budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels usually take birr; international hotels often quote in USD and accept cards.

Breakfast is commonly included at mid-range and international hotels. Expect to pay extra for airport transfers at cheaper places, and check whether the quoted rate includes the 15% VAT and service charge — many do not.

Book early around Timkat in January and during African Union summits, when the good hotels in Bole and Kazanchis fill and rates rise.

Ask for a room away from the road. Addis traffic and the call to prayer both start early, and street-facing rooms in Bole and Piassa are loud.

Confirm the airport transfer in writing, including the price. A hotel car is usually simpler than negotiating at the rank after a long flight.

Keep a small amount of birr for tips. Guides, drivers and hotel staff expect small tips, and restaurants add 5–10%.

If you are heading out on a multi-day southern or Rift Valley tour, ask whether the operator picks up from your hotel or from a central meeting point — this can decide which area you book.
