Free things to do in Addis Ababa

Addis rewards slow walking rather than ticketed sights. The ridge above the city, the market lanes and the squares cost nothing, and the paid stops are cheap enough to slot in between them. Prices below are 2026 estimates in birr; confirm at the gate.

Start high and early. Entoto's eucalyptus slopes are coolest before 10am, and the view over the capital opens up as the mist lifts. Come down for lunch, then take the museums and Meskel Square in the afternoon.

The free stops cluster in two areas. Piassa and Arat Kilo hold Merkato, St George's, Holy Trinity and the National Museum, all within walking distance of each other if you accept hills and traffic. Entoto sits north above them, reached by minibus or a short taxi ride.

Meskel Square and the Bole side are the modern centre: squares, malls and cafés, with the light rail linking the two halves of the city. Coordinates below are approximate; use them as a rough anchor, not a navigation pin.

Addis sits at about 2,355 m, so the first day feels harder than the map suggests. Drink water, skip the long uphill walk on arrival, and build in a rest. Mornings are clear in the dry season; afternoon cloud and short showers are normal in the wet months.

Carry small birr notes for minibuses, coffee and church entry. Cards are accepted in malls and hotels but not at stalls or ticket windows. Dress modestly for churches: shoulders and knees covered, and remove shoes where asked.

Photography is the main friction point at markets. Ask before pointing a camera at people, and expect some to say no or to ask for a small payment. Keep bags in front of you in Merkato and on crowded minibuses.

October to March is the dry window and the best time for walking, viewpoints and markets. Skies are clear, nights are cool and the Entoto paths are firm. December and January bring crowds and higher hotel rates, so book ahead.

June to September is the main rainy season: heavy afternoon rain, muddy paths and slower traffic. Free outdoor stops still work in the morning, but keep a paid indoor option as backup. Meskel, in late September, is the big public celebration, with the bonfire and processions around Meskel Square; dates follow the Ethiopian calendar, so check the year's date.

Bole International Airport is about 6 km southeast of the centre; a taxi or ride-hailing car takes roughly 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. The light rail runs from near the airport area toward Meskel Square and Piassa, and minibuses cover most districts for a few birr.

For the free cluster, base yourself around Piassa, Arat Kilo or Bole. Piassa puts Merkato and the churches within walking distance; Bole puts cafés, malls and the light rail close by. Fares and schedules change, so check locally on arrival.
