Best tours in Addis Ababa: walking, food and day tours

Addis rewards a short, structured half-day rather than a full day of driving. The city's sights sit in a rough ring — National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Entoto ridge, Merkato — and traffic eats time, so pick two or three and stop.

For a first visit, take a half-day city tour with a car and driver-guide. You get Lucy at the National Museum, the Entoto view over the capital, and a guided pass through Merkato, which is hard to walk alone. Do it on day one: it fixes your bearings and your coffee bearings at the same time.

If you have a second day, choose between a food and coffee walk inside the city and a full-day run out to the Bishoftu crater lakes. Coffee is the better half-day; Bishoftu is the better full day and the easiest taste of countryside within an hour of the capital.

Multi-day tours that leave Addis for the historic north are the one thing to avoid in 2026. The UK and US advise against all travel to much of Amhara, and flights to Lalibela were suspended on 24 September 2026. Southern and eastern routes — Harar, the Rift Valley lakes, Arba Minch, the Omo Valley — remain the workable multi-day options.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for one person, based on a shared group of two to six. Private cars cost more; a solo traveller joining a group pays the lower end. Confirm the inclusions — entry fees, coffee, lunch and water are sometimes separate.

Most operators run two windows: a morning start around 08:00–09:00 and an afternoon start around 13:30–14:00. Full-day trips leave earlier, around 07:30, to clear the city before the worst traffic. Friday afternoons are slow because of the Merkato half-day; Sunday mornings are quiet and good for Entoto.

Budget in birr for small costs: coffee, snacks, tips and any entry fee not bundled into the tour. Carry small notes. Cards work at larger hotels and some agencies, but street-level payments are usually cash, and USD notes are widely accepted for tours.

Tipping is expected but not fixed: a common range is 10–15 percent for a guide and a similar amount for a driver on a full day. Agree the total price, including any park or museum fees, before you set off.

Almost every tour starts with a hotel pickup in Bole, Kazanchis, Piassa or the Bole Road corridor. Give the operator your hotel name and a phone number the day before; pickup is usually included inside the city ring and charged extra from the outer suburbs.

If you are meeting a guide instead, the usual meeting points are the National Museum on King George VI Street, Meskel Square, or a café on Bole Road. Allow 30–60 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing app across the centre in daytime traffic, more in the 17:00–19:00 peak.

For Bishoftu, the drive is about 1 hour each way on the Adama road when traffic is clear, longer on Friday and Sunday afternoons when Addis empties out. Bring a light jacket: the crater-lake rim sits higher and cools down fast after 16:00.
