Getting there
Almost everyone arrives at Bole International Airport, 6–8 km from the centre. Traffic is the variable, not distance: allow 30–60 minutes to Meskel Square or Bole, longer at rush hour. Official taxis and ride-hailing apps both work; agree the fare or confirm the app price before you set off.
Flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand mostly connect through the Gulf, Nairobi or another African hub, and many land after midnight. If your flight from home arrives in the small hours, book the first night rather than trying to start sightseeing.
Within the city, minibus taxis are cheap and frequent but routes are not obvious to visitors. For a three-day trip, ride-hailing plus a hired car for the day trip is the simplest plan.
