Best day trips from Accra: how to get there and what to see

Accra sits on a flat coastal plain, and the interesting places around it are spread along the coast and into the hills north of the city. Distances look short on a map; traffic on the N1 and the Winneba road makes them long. The table below is the honest version: what you can actually see and return from in one day, and what needs an overnight.

Cape Coast and Elmina are the reason most travellers leave Accra at all. The two castles sit about 15 minutes apart, and each visit is a guided tour of roughly an hour. Doing both in one day from Accra means a 6am start and a late afternoon return; adding Kakum on the same day is possible only if you keep the castle tours short and skip lunch. Kakum's canopy walkway is a series of rope bridges through rainforest, reached by a short walk from the visitor centre. It is the single best nature stop within reach of Accra, but it is not a wildlife trip: you will hear more than you see. Go early, when the bridges are quieter and the light is better.

Aburi is the easy half-day. The botanical gardens sit on a cool ridge about an hour from the city, and the road up passes craft stalls and viewpoints. It pairs well with a late lunch and a return before the evening traffic builds.

Ada Foah sits where the Volta River meets the sea, with sandbars, boat trips and birdlife. It is a slower, more spread-out day than the castles, and the last stretch of road can be rough. Shai Hills is the closest thing to a safari from the city: open savanna, baboons and antelope, short walking trails and caves, all within about 90 minutes of central Accra.

Tema is a working port rather than a sight, but the drive east is short and there are beach stops along the way. Treat it as a half-day filler, not a headline trip.

There is no cheap public transport option that gets you to Cape Coast and back comfortably in a day. The realistic choices are a hired car with driver, an organised tour, or a trotro with an overnight stay. Prices below are 2026 estimates and should be confirmed locally before you commit.

Leave Accra by 6am. The city's outbound traffic is the single biggest thing that turns a good day trip into a bad one, and the same applies on the way back: aim to be inside Accra before 6pm.

Hire the car through your hotel or a company you can call, and take the driver's phone number. Mobile data is cheap and useful for maps and for calling ahead; an eSIM set up before you land saves time.

Bring cash in cedis, water, sun protection and a light rain layer. The coast is humid year round, and the hills around Aburi are noticeably cooler and wetter. If your trip falls in the rainy months, check road conditions before committing to Ada Foah or the rougher coastal stretches.
