Best time to visit Ghana: weather and seasons by month

Ghana has one easy window and two rainy seasons. The coast around Accra and Cape Coast gets a long wet spell peaking in June and a shorter one in October. The forest belt and Volta hills are wetter and greener for longer. The northern savanna around Tamale and Mole has a single rainy season from May to October.

This is the window most visitors should aim for. Rain is rare, roads to Cape Coast, Kumasi and the north are at their easiest, and the landscape is still green in November before the dust arrives. November is the quietest of these four months and often the best value of the good-weather months. The forest belt and Volta hills stay wetter than the coast for longer, so some rain is still possible there even in this window.

December brings 'December in GH': concerts, diaspora returns, full hotels and the year's highest fares. If you want the dry season without the price, come in the first half of January after the holiday crowds leave, or in November.

From December the Harmattan blows Saharan dust across the country. It gives hazy, softer light and cooler nights, but it can reduce visibility and occasionally disrupt flights (check). It also dries the air, which some travellers find hard on the throat and eyes.

March and April are the hottest months, and the north is the hardest hit: Tamale and Mole regularly top 40 °C before the rains break. The coast is hot and humid in the same weeks but stays well below that. Independence Day on 6 March brings a parade in Accra and road closures around Black Star Square. Easter is a big travel weekend, with the Kwahu ridge filling up for its paragliding festival.

The coast's long rains peak in June, the wettest month in Accra, when street flooding slows traffic. July and August often bring a cooler, drier spell on the coast even as the north stays wet. September and October are the second rainy stretch in the south, while the north dries out from October.

The rains are not a reason to cancel. Downpours are typically heavy and short rather than all-day drizzle (check locally), and waterfalls in the Volta hills are strongest from June to October. Forest trails around Kakum and Kumasi turn to mud, so bring shoes with grip.

Prices track demand. December is the most expensive month for flights and hotels, and the first week of January stays busy before it drops. April, May, June, September and October are likely to be the lower-cost months, because they fall in the rains and few people travel — check fares and rates for your dates rather than assuming.

Festivals pull domestic crowds rather than international ones, so they raise hotel demand in one city more than fares overall. Homowo and Chale Wote in Accra in August, and Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast in September, are the ones to plan around (check dates).

If your trip is Accra and the Cape Coast castles only, November to February is ideal, and August is a good second choice for the short dry spell. If you are heading north to Mole, aim for November to February or the January–April window when animals gather at waterholes; avoid March and April heat and the May–October rains.

For Kumasi, Kakum and the Volta hills, the forest belt is wetter than the coast for longer, so the same November to February window works best, with July and August a reasonable compromise if you accept some rain.

Driving anywhere in Ghana is best done in daylight, and that matters more in the rains when roads flood and shoulders erode.

Book December flights and hotels early; the rest of the year you can be flexible. Pack for heat and humidity year-round, add a light rain shell for the wet months, and add a dust mask or scarf if you travel during the Harmattan.

Public holidays close offices and banks but rarely stop tourism. The ones that affect travel are Independence Day on 6 March in Accra, Easter, and the December holiday peak.

Cultural festivals are worth timing a trip around if you accept bigger crowds: Homowo and Chale Wote in Accra in August, Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast on the first Saturday of September, and the Aboakyir deer-hunt festival in Winneba on the first weekend of May (check dates, as some move with the lunar calendar).
