The details
Osu is the default for a first visit. Oxford Street and the side roads around it hold restaurants, bars, cafés and small hotels, and you can walk between many of them after dark. It is busy and can be noisy, so ask for a room away from the street if you sleep early. Labadi beach and the Independence Arch area are a short ride away.
Airport City, the strip around Kotoka International Airport, is quieter and built for short stays. Hotels here are newer and more standardized, which suits a one-night stopover or a business trip. You trade street life for convenience: most dinners need a taxi unless your hotel has a good restaurant.
The beach belt runs east from Labadi through La, Teshie and Nungua. Labadi and La have the larger resort-style hotels and easier beach access; Nungua and Teshie are cheaper and more local. Swimming is not always safe because of currents and water quality, so check with your hotel before going in.
Jamestown, west of the centre, is the old colonial quarter around the lighthouse and the fishing harbour. It has character and a few guesthouses, but fewer services and more caution needed at night.
