Best time to visit Accra: weather, crowds and events by month

Accra sits on the coast, so it never gets the extreme heat of the north and never really cools down. What changes is rain, haze and how many people are in town. The table below is the short version; the paragraphs after it explain the trade-offs.

The long rains run roughly April to June and peak in June, when streets flood and taxis slow to a crawl. A shorter rainy spell arrives in September–October, usually as heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. July–August often turns into a cooler, drier break on the coast, which is why it is a popular window despite sitting inside the rainy half of the year.

If you want dry, clear days and easy road trips to Cape Coast or Ada, aim for November to February. November is the sweet spot: the rains have stopped, the land is still green and the Harmattan dust has not yet arrived. December to February stays dry but the Harmattan can drop a pale haze over the coast, softening photos and drying out your throat; it rarely stops you doing anything.

February to April is the hot stretch. Humidity makes Accra feel heavier than the thermometer suggests, and the north of Ghana is far hotter — if Mole National Park is on your list, do it in January or February rather than March. If you are only doing Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi, heat is manageable with early starts and a midday break.

June is the one month worth planning around. It is not dangerous, but flooding can strand you, and beach and castle days lose their appeal. If June is your only option, keep plans flexible and stay in a central neighbourhood so you are less dependent on long taxi rides.

Accra's high season is built around December in GH: concerts, parties and diaspora family visits. Hotels fill, short-let apartments go first, and flights into Kotoka International Airport are at their most expensive of the year. Book accommodation and flights two to three months ahead for late December, and expect airport transfers to take longer in traffic.

The cheapest months are April to June and September to October. Fares and room rates drop, but you trade that for rain. If you want low prices without the worst weather, late January and early February are a good compromise: the holiday rush is over, the Harmattan is easing and the coast is still dry.

Festivals move the needle more than seasons do. Homowo and Chale Wote in August, Independence Day in March and the Winneba Aboakyir in May all pull domestic travellers into Accra and the coast for a few days. Dates shift, so confirm before you book around one.

Rain in Accra usually arrives as a heavy burst rather than a grey day, so a compact umbrella and quick-drying shoes beat a rain jacket. Streets in low-lying areas flood fast; if a downpour starts, wait it out in a café rather than pushing through traffic.

The Harmattan is dry and dusty. Contact-lens wearers and anyone with asthma should carry drops and a mask, and expect a fine film of dust on everything by the end of the day.

Build your days around mornings. Traffic in Accra is heavy from around 6am and again in the late afternoon, so an early start gets you to Jamestown, Makola or the beach before the worst of it. Keep a local eSIM active so you can call a ride when you need one.
