Zurich is small enough to walk. The old town on both banks of the Limmat, the lakefront promenades and the university hill sit within about 2 km of the main station, so a weekend plan is mostly about choosing one big thing per half-day and leaving room for weather.
Day one: old town and the lake. Start at Zurich HB, walk down Bahnhofstrasse to Bürkliplatz, then take a lake boat or walk the promenade to the Chinese Garden and Zürichhorn. Cross to the west bank for Niederdorf in the late afternoon and eat there.
Day two: pick one. Clear day — Uetliberg ridge walk or a boat to Rapperswil. Rain — Kunsthaus or the Landesmuseum, then the west side around Zurich West for food and bars. If you have a third day, add a Rhine Falls or Lucerne trip.

Map and layout
Everything a two-day visitor needs sits in a rough triangle: Zurich HB and the old town at the north, the lake at the south, and Zurich West to the west. Distances are short — HB to Bürkliplatz is about 1.5 km, or two tram stops.
Use the tram for the west side and the S-Bahn for Uetliberg. Boats leave from Bürkliplatz on the lake side and from Limmatquai on the river. The airport is roughly 10–15 minutes by S-Bahn from HB (check), so a late Friday arrival still leaves the evening free.

Tips
Buy tickets before boarding. Zurich runs on proof-of-payment: you need a valid ticket for the whole journey, and inspectors check on board. The ZVV app or a machine at the stop both work.
Book accommodation early for June to September and for the Christmas market weeks in December, when prices are at their highest. Sunday is quiet — most shops are closed, though the main station and airport keep longer hours, so plan a museum, a walk or a boat rather than shopping.
Swimming is free and popular in summer at the lake beaches and the river at Oberer Letten and Unterer Letten; changing rooms and lifeguard cover are seasonal, so check locally before you rely on them. In winter, the fog can sit on the city for days while the mountains are sunny, so a train up to Uetliberg or further into the Alps is a good escape.
Tipping is not expected; service is included. Tap water is safe to drink and free in restaurants if you ask for it, though some places charge for the glass.
