Best tours in Zurich: walking, food and day tours

Zurich is small enough to walk in a morning, so the tour that earns its place is the one that explains what you are looking at: the Roman and medieval layers under the old town, the Reformation history around Grossmünster and St Peter, and why the Bahnhofstrasse exists where it does. Take that on day one, then use the rest of your time on boats and trains rather than on more guides.

Food tours work well in Zurich because the city has a compact market and café scene, but they are the most weather- and group-dependent option. Lake and river trips are transport as much as sightseeing: the same boats that locals use to reach lakeside suburbs double as a cheap cruise. Mountain day tours are the ones to think hardest about, since Swiss trains reach most of the same places on their own.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for one adult and usually exclude food, drinks and any entry fee the guide does not cover. Free walking tours exist in Zurich and work on tips; CHF 10–20 per person is a normal thank-you. Small-group tours cost more than coach tours and are easier to hear on.

Most city tours leave between 09:00 and 11:00 and again in the early afternoon. Food tours usually run late morning or early evening, and many do not operate on Sundays or Mondays when market stalls and some shops are closed. Lake boats run on a seasonal timetable: frequent in summer, reduced or suspended in the cold months. Always confirm the departure point the day before, since Zurich tours often start at the main station or in front of Grossmünster.

Almost every Zurich tour starts within a 15-minute walk of Zurich HB, the main station. From the airport, trains run to HB in about 10 minutes and are the fastest way into the centre; taxis take longer and cost far more. Trams 4, 11, 14 and 15 and several bus lines cross the old town, and the Polybahn funicular links the university quarter to the centre in under two minutes.

If your tour includes a boat or a mountain railway, check whether the meeting point is at the dock or at a station rather than in the old town. For day tours to Lucerne, the Rhine Falls or the Alps, the operator usually meets you at HB or at a central hotel; the train leg is often the same service you could book yourself. Flying in from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, an early-morning arrival usually leaves enough time for an afternoon walking tour, but not for a full-day mountain trip.
