Can you leave the airport?
Yes — Zürich Airport is one of the easiest in Europe to leave, because the train station sits directly under the terminal and the city centre is about 10 minutes away. The question is whether you have the time and the paperwork.
Time is the real constraint. Immigration, the train, the walk to a sight and the return all cost minutes, and you must be back through security well before departure. As a rule: with under 4 hours, stay in the terminal. With 6 hours you can see the old town at a walk. With 12 hours you can add a lake boat or a museum. With 24 hours you can sleep in the city and treat it as a short stay.

Getting into the city and back
The train is the default. Zürich Airport station is under the terminal; SBB trains run to Zurich HB in about 10 minutes, several times an hour, and continue to other Swiss cities. Buy a ticket from the machine or app before boarding.
Trams and buses from the airport also reach the city, but they are slower and less useful for a short layover. Taxis and ride-hailing cost far more and save little time in normal traffic.
Coming back, allow 2 hours before departure for a long-haul flight and 90 minutes for a short-haul one: security queues at Zürich are usually quick but not always. The train back to the airport runs late into the evening.
