Zurich airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Everything below leaves from the same building: the airport's own station is on the lowest level, signed from arrivals. The tram and bus stops are outside, and taxis wait at the kerb by Arrivals 1 and 2.

Zurich Airport (ZRH) has its own station, Zurich Flughafen, directly beneath the terminal. Follow the train signs down one level from arrivals; you do not go outside. Trains run to Zurich HB, the main station, in about 10–12 minutes, and continue to other Swiss cities, so the same platform serves both city and country travellers.

Buy a ticket before boarding. Machines take cards and coins, and the SBB app sells the same fare. There are no gates; inspectors check on board and the fine for riding without a ticket is steep. If you are staying in Zurich for a day or more, a city day pass or the Zurich Card covers the airport trip and all trams, buses and boats in the city zones.

At Zurich HB you are on the edge of the old town. Trams and buses leave from the square in front, and the main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, starts across the road. Most hotels in the centre are a 5–15 minute walk or one tram stop away.

Tram 10 stops outside the airport and runs to Zurich's centre, ending near the main station. It takes 30–35 minutes, costs the same as the train, and is useful if you want to see the city on the way in or your hotel sits along the route. Glattpark, Oerlikon and Milchbuck are on the way; the centre stops are Irchel, ETH/Universitätsspital and Bahnhofplatz.

Regional buses serve nearby towns and the airport-area hotels, but for the city centre the train is faster in every case. If you are heading to Winterthur or Baden rather than Zurich, check the direct train first: both have frequent services from the airport station.

Taxis wait outside Arrivals 1 and 2 and run on the meter. Expect CHF 60–80 to the city centre in normal traffic, more at night or in rain (2026 estimate). Card payment is normal. A ride-hail car or a pre-booked transfer with a fixed price costs about the same and can be easier if you are arriving late with family or ski bags.

For a group of three or four with luggage, a taxi can be close to the per-person train fare once you add a taxi at the other end, so it is not the extravagance it looks like. For one or two people, the train wins on both time and money.

If your flight lands after the last fast connection, the night S-trains still run but less often; check the SBB app for your date before deciding between train and taxi.

Swiss fares are distance-based and honest: the airport is inside the Zurich fare network, so a normal city ticket covers it. Buy from a machine, the SBB app or a ticket office in the terminal. Children under 16 travel free with a parent on the Junior Card, and under 6 always free.

If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, a Half Fare card or a regional pass, the airport leg is included or discounted the same way as any other train. That is one reason to activate the pass on arrival rather than in the city.

Keep the ticket until you leave the last vehicle. Inspectors board without warning and the penalty fare is around CHF 100 plus the ticket you should have bought.

Allow 20 minutes from stepping off the plane to sitting on a train if you have no checked bags, and 45–60 minutes with bags and passport control. Zurich airport is efficient but not instant, and the walk from some gates to the station is long.

Trains are step-free, but the platform at the airport is one level below the shopping arcade, so use the lifts with heavy luggage. Left-luggage lockers at Zurich HB let you drop bags and walk the old town before check-in.

Swiss sockets are type J; a thin European two-pin plug usually fits, a thick German one does not. Buy a Swiss adapter at the airport if you forgot one. Tap water is excellent everywhere, including station fountains.
