Yuma sits in Arizona's southwest corner on the Colorado River, across from California and about an hour from the Mexican border. It calls itself the sunniest city on earth, and the numbers back it: it is the driest and least humid populated place in the contiguous US, with 175 days a year at 32°C or above. Winter visitors fill the RV parks from November to March; summer is punishing. Most travellers use it as one night on Interstate 8 between San Diego and Phoenix, or as a snowbird base for a week or more.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 15 km and buses are limited. YCAT runs local routes Monday–Friday roughly 5:50AM–7:30PM and Saturday 9AM–6:30PM, with a central stop at E 3rd and S Gila. Streets are numbered south from the river; avenues west of downtown are lettered (Avenue A, B), east of downtown numbered (Avenue 3E, 5E).

Watch out

Safety

Yuma is a low-crime city by US standards; the real risks are summer heat, desert roads with long gaps between services, and the border area at night. Carry water, keep a full tank, and treat June–September afternoons as indoor time.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard: plan indoor or early-morning activity from June to September and carry water.
  • Amtrak's Sunset Limited calls at an unmanned platform with no shelter or restrooms; westbound trains arrive around 3AM and delays are common.
  • The Yuma Proving Ground museum requires ID and proof of auto insurance at the main gate.
  • The Territorial Prison park closes in August; check before you build a trip around it.
  • Border crossings at San Luis and Andrade can have long waits; carry your passport.
