Northam and Toodyay
Northam sits where the Avon Valley meets the hills, about half an hour west of York. The town has a wide main street, a small heritage railway station and a lookout over the river valley. It is the practical base for the valley: fuel, supermarkets and the last reliable services before the Wheatbelt thins out.
Toodyay, further north along the Avon, is smaller and slower. The old gaol, a handful of cafés and a riverside park make it a good half-day. Both towns are on the Avon River, and both are worth a stop on the way to or from Perth rather than a destination in themselves.
This is the trip to take if you are short on time, travelling with children, or want to be back in York before dark.

Southern Cross and the eastern Wheatbelt
Southern Cross is an old gold-mining town on the Great Eastern Highway, about 1 hour 45 minutes east of York. The highway itself is the attraction: long, straight and empty, with salt lakes and scrub either side. In town there is a small museum, a couple of pubs and a lookout on the hill above the main street.
This is a full day if you drive out and back, and it makes more sense as a stop on a longer run toward Kalgoorlie or the Goldfields. Take water, food and a full tank; services between York and Southern Cross are sparse.
If you are heading further east, the Goldfields–Esperance region is the next step and deserves its own trip rather than a day.

Hyden and Wave Rock
Wave Rock, near Hyden, is the Wheatbelt's best-known natural sight: a granite wave about 15 m high and 110 m long, with a walking trail along the top and Aboriginal rock art nearby. It is roughly 290 km from York, so about 3.5 hours each way.
That is a 7-hour driving day before you have looked at anything. Most travellers do it as an overnight from Perth or York, staying in Hyden, rather than as a day trip. If you only have one day, Southern Cross is the more sensible eastern run.
Entry to the rock and the surrounding reserve is managed by the local shire and a fee applies per vehicle; confirm current rates on arrival (check).

Doing it without a car
York has no useful local bus network for sightseeing. Regional coach services run along Great Eastern Highway between Perth and the Wheatbelt, and some stop at Northam; York itself is served only sporadically. Schedules are built for residents, not visitors, and weekend services are thin.
Realistically, a car — your own, a rental from Perth, or a shared tour — is the only way to see the places on this page in a day. If you cannot drive, base yourself in Perth for the Wheatbelt and join an organised tour, or hire a car for the days you want to explore.

Practical tips
Start early. Distances in the Wheatbelt are bigger than they look on a map, and you do not want to be driving unsealed back roads after sunset.
Summer heat is the real hazard. From December to February, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 35 °C, and there is little shade between towns. Carry more water than you think you need, and check fire danger ratings before leaving — total fire ban days mean no cooking or open flames outdoors.
