York itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

York is a small Wheatbelt town, not a city, so the itinerary question is really how much time to give the historic centre and how far you are willing to drive around it. The table below matches each length to the traveller it suits.

Start early in Perth and drive east; the run takes roughly 1.5 hours in good conditions, so you can be in town before the heat builds. Park once near the main street and walk the historic centre: the courthouse, the old mill and the railway station area are the anchors, and the whole strip is short enough to cover on foot in an hour or two.

Midday, take the river walk along the Avon, then eat in town before the kitchens wind down. Afternoon is the time for the lookout over the valley if you have a car, or a second museum if you do not. Aim to leave by late afternoon: driving back to Perth in the dark on country roads is the part most visitors dislike.

Two days lets you stop rushing. Day one: arrive by mid-morning, walk the main street, have lunch, then spend the afternoon on the river and the lookout. Stay in town so you get the early morning light on the old buildings, which is when the place is quietest.

Day two: pick the museum or heritage site you skipped, then drive a short loop of the surrounding farmland and hills before heading back. If you are continuing east, this is the natural point to push on towards the Wheatbelt rather than doubling back to Perth.

Three days in York itself is more than the town needs, so use the third day for a nearby destination. Toodyay is the closest match in character and makes an easy half-day. Hyden and the Wave Rock area sit much further east and are a long drive, so treat that as a full day or an overnight rather than a casual add-on.

If you would rather not drive further, spend the third day on a slow loop of the Avon Valley: back roads, a picnic, and a second look at the town when the day-trippers have gone.

York is cheap by Australian city standards because the main activity is walking. The real costs are fuel and, if you stay, accommodation. Prices below are 2026 estimates and vary with season and how far ahead you book.

Distances in the Wheatbelt are longer than they look on a map, and phone signal can drop between towns. Download an offline map before you leave Perth and carry water in the car, especially from December to February when daytime temperatures regularly pass 35 °C.

Food and fuel hours are the main trap. Many kitchens close in the late afternoon and some businesses shut early or on quiet days, so plan to eat before about 17:00 or bring supplies. Check opening days for individual museums before you commit to a two-day stay.
