Where to stay in York: best neighborhoods and hotels

York is a small Wheatbelt town, so the choice is less about which suburb and more about which kind of bed: a heritage building on the main street, a motel or caravan park, or a farmstay in the surrounding valley. The table below sets out what each gives you, what it costs and how long you would want in it.

Avon Terrace is the spine of York: a wide street of late-1800s buildings with the pubs, cafés and shops along it. Staying here means you park once and walk to dinner, and the heritage buildings, the old mill and the river are all within a short stroll. For a first visit of one or two nights this is the obvious base.

The stock is small: a handful of pub rooms, guesthouses and B&Bs in converted buildings, plus a motel or two on the edges of the centre. Rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious, and some heritage buildings have thin walls and shared bathrooms, so read the room description before booking. Ask about parking, since street parking near the pubs fills on weekend evenings.

Outside town, the Avon Valley opens into farmland, and a string of farmstays, B&Bs and self-contained cottages sit among it. This is the pick if you want quiet, dark skies, space for children to run, or a base for a few days of walking and driving. You will need a car for everything, including dinner.

Distances are short in absolute terms but there is no useful public transport, and wildlife on the road at dusk is a real hazard. If you plan to eat out in the evening, check whether your host offers a meal or whether you are driving back into town after dark. Cell coverage can be patchy on the smaller properties, so save the directions offline.

York is cheaper than Perth and much cheaper than the Margaret River wine region. A motel room or caravan park cabin is the budget option; a heritage guesthouse or self-contained cottage sits in the middle; a farmstay with meals included is the top of the local range. Book early for September and October, when wildflower season fills the Wheatbelt, and for school holidays. Outside those windows you can often decide on the day, but the total number of beds in town is small enough that a single event can sell it out.

If you are coming from Perth for one night, a town-centre room saves you the drive back after dinner. If you are staying two or three nights and want to explore the valley, Hyden and Toodyay, a farmstay or cottage works better and usually costs less per night than two separate hotel nights.
