Metro, buses and marshrutkas
Yerevan's metro is a single line running roughly north–south, with about ten stations linking the centre, the railway station and the southern districts. It is the fastest way across town during the 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00 peaks, when traffic on the main avenues slows to a crawl. Trains are frequent and the stations are easy to use once you know your stop.
Buses and marshrutkas fill the gaps the metro leaves. Newer electric buses have appeared on some routes, and payment on those is by card or app rather than cash; on older vehicles you still pay the driver or a conductor. Marshrutkas stop on request, so tell the driver or watch for your landmark.
For a short stay, pay per ride. A reloadable transit card exists but is worth it only for longer stays or repeated trips; check the current card rules and top-up points locally.

Taxis and ride-hailing
Ride-hailing apps such as GG and Yandex Go are the simplest option for visitors: you set the destination, see the price before you ride, and pay in the app. A trip across the centre typically costs AMD 600–2,000, which makes taxis competitive with two metro fares for a group. Cars arrive in a few minutes in the centre, longer in outer districts or heavy rain.
Street taxis still exist and can be fine, but agree the fare or insist on the meter before you get in, and have the address in Armenian or a map pin ready. At the airport, use the app or the official taxi rank rather than accepting an offer inside the terminal.

Practical tips
Yerevan's centre is walkable, so plan your day by district rather than criss-crossing: Cascade and the opera area together, Republic Square and Vernissage together. That cuts most taxi trips to two or three a day.
Summer afternoons are hot and winter pavements can be icy, so the metro or a taxi is often worth the small cost. Keep small notes for cash fares, and carry a card for the newer buses.
