The detail
Garni and Geghard are the standard first day trip because they are close and cover two different things: a 1st-century temple and a monastery cut into the rock. Most people do both in half a day, with a 30-minute walk down into Garni gorge to the basalt columns. Go early in summer; the site has little shade.
The Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank loop is the classic full day south. Khor Virap sits on the plain with Ararat behind it, best in the morning before haze builds. Areni has wine cellars and a cave, and Noravank's red cliffs are 15 minutes further up a side road. It is a long day by shared tour, roughly 8–10 hours door to door.
Lake Sevan is the easy escape from summer heat. Sevanavank monastery is on a peninsula in the lake town, with beaches and fish restaurants nearby. June to September is the season; outside it the lake is cold and many places close.
Echmiadzin (Vagharshapat) is the seat of the Armenian Church and only 20–30 minutes out, so it works as a half day. Ashtarak is even closer and quiet. Tsaghkadzor is a ski town in winter and a cable-car and walking stop in summer.
Dilijan and Haghartsin monastery fit in one long day by car or tour, but you see little of the forest. Tatev is about four hours each way; treat it as an overnight in Goris, not a day trip. The same goes for Haghpat and Sanahin in Lori.
What a day trip costs
Shared minibus tours are the cheapest way to cover several sites in one day, and they remove the driving. Private car with driver runs higher and is worth it for three or four people splitting the cost.
If you self-drive, fuel is cheap by Western European standards but mountain roads and unfamiliar signs add risk. Parking at monasteries is usually free or a small fee.

Practical tips
- Start early. Most tours leave 8–9am; afternoon traffic out of Yerevan adds 30 minutes.
- Carry cash in AMD. Many monasteries and small cafés do not take cards.
- Dress modestly for monasteries: shoulders and knees covered; women can usually take a scarf at the door.
- Buy an eSIM before you fly so maps and translation work offline on mountain roads.
- Check your government's travel advice before any route on or near the Azerbaijan border, including the M2 south.
